Criées – Rites des bords de la Méditerranée is an artistic research project exploring the survival of rituals, their transmission and the memories circulating from one shore of the Mediterranean to the other.
Drawing on immersive fieldwork carried out amongst communities of African descent in Turkey and in Tunisia, with a particular focus on the Dana Baïrami and Stambeli rituals, the project explores how these rituals survive, what do they do in order to survive and how they disappear, re-emerge, and why.
Through sound recordings, songs, stories and testimony, Criées seeks to hear the voices and calls that resonate around the Mediterranean. Criées also seeks to honour those whose voices were silenced at sea, whilst questioning what, despite the tragedy, continues to circulate, resist and sing.
